Learfield Sports Directors' Cup

Mesa State College Mavericks  ranked 50th in the 2008-2009 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup final standings released at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention in Orlando, Florida. The overall standings include 232 NCAA Division II schools and points are determined by a scoring system that ranks the success at the national level in 27 sports. Each schools points are determined in 14 of the 27 sports to ensure equality among schools that sponsor a different number of sports.

MSC tallied 308.50 total points, scoring in six different sports, including a top five ranking in baseball. MSC’s spring sports totaled 260.00 of its 308.50 total points. Points from spring sports (baseball, softball, women’s golf, men’s & women’s tennis) were all teams which qualified for post season berths.

Mesa State’s wrestling team tallied 48.50 total points (winter). Rhett Breed and Chase Walker each wrestled to third place finishes at the RMAC/Regional Tournament, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Walker finished fifth at the national tournament.

The Mavericks baseball team advanced to the Division II College World Series for the first time in school history and finished the year ranked 5th in the nation. The baseball team’s fifth place finish earned 78 points. MSC’s softball team ranked ninth to capture 64 points. The softball team finished the year ranked 16th in Division II. The Mavs advanced to the Super Regional before falling to Winona State.

MSC’s women’s tennis team hosted its first ever regional pod this spring. The Mavericks were crowned RMAC regular season champion, advancing to host the central regional. The Mavs finished 17th in the final cup standings (50 points).

The women’s golf team earned an NCAA post season tournament berth as the #5 ranked team in the central region. The team finished 8th at the nine-team super regional in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. MSC earned 43 points in the cup standings and 30th place overall.

The Maverick men’s tennis team earned 25 cup standing points (33rd place) following an outstanding season and a trip to the NCAA DII regional tournament.

Grand Valley State (Michigan) won its sixth consecutive cup title with 1014 ½ points.

Five RMAC institutions finished in the top 50; including two in the top 20.  Adams State placed 8th (585 points), and Western State 12th (485). No. 13 Metro State (479.95), No. 28 Nebraska-Kearney (408.5) and No. 50 Mesa State (308.5).
